FreshSAFE: extending shelf life for fresh produce


FreshSAFE is a comprehensive packaging solution designed for fresh fruit and vegetables. The technology is used to create a package specifically tailored not only to the product, but also to its state (e.g. whole, cut, diced etc.) in order to deliver the maximum shelf life.

Our FreshSAFE expertise is applicable on all Multivac packaging machines, including thermoformers, tray sealers and chamber machines. The solution covers the packaging machine as well as our consultation on the ideal package atmosphere, storage conditions and suitable packaging materials. 

Tests can also be undertaken at our Application Center.

 

For all fresh fruits and vegetables including the most delicate such as mushrooms, spinach, lettuce and berries

Pre-made trays (for tray sealers) or thermoformed pockets (on thermoformers) are filled with fresh fruit or vegetables and then sealed inline with a top film. Depending on the product, this film might be also micro-perforated inline. On chamber machines the filled (standard) pouches can also be micro-perforated.


The microperforations make the packaging permeable. After a certain length of time an equilibrium modified atmosphere develops (passive EMAP), in which the fresh produce stays fresh for much longer.


Alternatively the atmosphere can be modified immediately after packaging to establish the equilibrium modified atmosphere needed to extend the shelf life.
